Segmented Ball Valves

Segmented ball valves are a type of quarter-turn trunnion-mounted valve. It is utilized to control the flow of fluid in the pipeline system. Referred to as “segmented” because the ball inside the valve is not a complete sphere. But rather a V-notch contour segment in the ball. This design allows for the valve to have a high capacity, tight sealing, and non-clogging flow control.

Generally speaking, the segmented ball valve is not a bidirectional valve. You can see an arrow to show the flow path on the body. Compared to a traditional ball valve, you can use a segment ball valve to throttle the fluid. You have several options on the V bore from 15-degree to 90-degree angles.

A segment ball valve is used in high-pressure applications that work on viscous media or abrasive media including slurry, fiber, and grime. This valve can operate in the -50°F to +500°F temperature range.

· Material Type

The material of the segmented ball valve depends on the material used to control it. Below are some of the materials used.

Brass is used because of its non-corrosiveness, durability, and resilience to high temperatures. Brass is not compatible with salty water, acids, and chlorides.

PVC is used for fluids like acids, salty water, and organic solvents and is compatible with chlorinated hydrocarbons. The Pressure and temperature resistance is lower than that of brass.

Stainless steel is used for chemicals and high-temperature materials. Steel does not support chlorides, hydrochloric acids and bleaching agents.

· Working Pressure

How Segmented Ball Valve Works

A segmented ball valve is a valve that opens and closes in a 90-degree angle turn that is a quarter turn. The valve has shafts that are the driving and follower shafts. Besides, the shafts are made in such a way that it increases the rate of fluid flow.

The driving shaft rotates to turn that segmented ball to open up letting the fluid flow through the v-notch of the ball. Usually, the fluid then is directed to the follower shaft which is directed out to either a flanged or flangeless connection.

How to Troubleshoot Segmented Ball Valve

To prevent gland leakages you can do the following.

  • Tighten gland nuts and all other nuts to assure they are not loose.
  • Replace worn out parts like gland packing, gasket, damaged seats and bearings.
  • Clean and maintain parts like stem, stuffing box, ball valve, seal, seat spring, and body when corroded. Also, clean the entire valve regularly to remove solid media.
  • Fix the close limit of the ball if not in full closing position.
  • When the seat and segment are not in alignment, loosen the gland packing to be able to position it in a central position and then tighten it when fully aligned.
  • When the segment is in reverse and disengages from the seat. Loosen the liner retainer and engage the segment and the seat back. Tighten the liner retainer back to maintain torque.
  • If the actuator does not align with the valve stem. Loosen the fasteners and realign the actuators back in a centered position, and tighten back the fasteners when done
